Loki Laufeyson is best known as the God of Mischief, but he is much more. He is one of the three Gods who gifted humankind with life. He is the God of the Hearthfire, a place more commonly held by Goddesses in other pantheons. He is the mother of Sleipnir, Odin’s eight-legged stead. Some of His other children include Fenrir, the World-Eating Wolf; Jörmungandr, the Midgard-Serpent; and Hel, the Giantess-Goddess of the Underworld. Most interesting and least known, however, is that Loki is the patron God of Ergi, or, Unmanly Behavior. Ergi includes a wide array of attributes and activities, from cross-dressing to receiving anal penetration. Also of interest, argr, the adjectival form of ergi, also translates in modern usage as angry or annoyed. In conclusion, Loki is (one of) the patron God(s/esses) of Hard Femme.

Reblogging mostly for the artwork. This is really close to how I imagine Loki, especially with the androgynous features and small breasts
and I can relate to the whole ergi-thing more than I should I suppose.Oh wow that’s really awesome, I’ve never heard that before I’m gonna want to do more research into it. Anyone have any sources?
Because if this is all true the it’s official, Loki is and always will be my favorite God.“Loki is one of the three Gods who gifted humankind with life.” Why can I not find this information outside Tumblr?
I’m just a little suspicious; everything else is right. But I read/was taught that Odin, Vili, and Ve were the ones responsible for humankind. And when I went to look it up, everything led only to this post…
Way not to credit the artist too. That’s really not cool guys. http://bardoftheseas.deviantart.com/art/The-God-of-Mischief-299455416
OMG no you didn’t. 8I Ask sent. Seriously, people? This post has over 1500 notes! HE COULD HAVE GOTTEN WORK FROM THIS. Now it’s too damn late. Cuz 1500 people liked and reblogged without even knowing who it was.
EVEN ASIDE FROM THAT THIS PIECE IS FUCKIN AMAZING IT DESERVES TO BE CREDITED.
NICK ROBLES everyone. He is a bamf.
Reblogging my work, and saying thank you to my friends who found out this was on tumblr without any credit! Thanks guys! <3
Also, I’m glad everyone likes my Loki! Thanks to all of you, too! <3
LOOK EVERYONE HE’S ON TUMBLR TOO. <3

Ahhhhh, so many weeks keep passing and I’m still stuck on this ONE THING with this story, and it is unfortunately a thing that happens soon enough I haven’t continued yet. It’s just this ONE design idea that I cannot seem to hammer out.
Ugh.
Anyway, I have been working out some other things in the meantime, specifically characters, so I figured I’d show some of the work I’ve done on them (there’s more where this came from, but as an intro here is a little cut off lineup XD). A lot of longtime followers will notice a whole new set of characters coming in to play. As Mika takes on the main role I want to make sure the people he brings to the plate get plenty of um… ‘screen time’ so to speak haha.
Left to right: Draycen (aka Eko), Mika, Jamie and Torr :B
Posting this on my artblog too :( Send her love everyone!

More new stuff coming from that critical eye I was talking about, though in this instance it was more of a ‘…OH. WHY DIDN’T I REALIZE THAT BEFORE’ moment. That happens to me a lot actually, I’m starting to wonder if I’ll ever get to know my characters entirely or if I’ll just have derp moments of realization forever. I mean really, I’ve had this character since I was just a kid, you’d think by now… better late then never though I guess!
Soothsayer
Those of you that follow me on deviantart, and probably some of you here as well, may have taken notice of a strange silence from me in regards to the stories I usually illustrate constantly.
The truth of it is I’ve been taking a very critical eye to them, trying to target the problematic areas (there were many), and eliminate them on my own before I put them out for seeing. The Mad Botanist was supposed to be my first open step toward the fantasy/sci-fi genre, but it was suffering from a lot of problems that were holding me back. I never released a whole lot of information regarding the story and setting etc, but a lot of the influences I wanted to draw on and things I wanted to do with it I shied away from for a lot of stupid reasons. Since I’ve been pushing myself in regards to this with Paint By Number, I thought it was high time I did it to the far worse culprit of this.
So anywho here is a recent concept for it :B I have a lot more I’ve been working on, but I’ll post them later. FOR NOW JUST HAVE THIS.
TUMBLR BOMB THE SHIT OUT OF THIS!

The fact is that transgender people—in particular, transgender people of color—have simply not experienced the same strides forward as their lesbian, gay and bisexual brothers and sisters. A landmark new report, ‘Injustice at Every Turn,’ presents undeniable proof. This report, released on Friday, is based on a comprehensive survey of over 6,000 transgender people and the findings are too shocking to ignore, especially when it comes to African-American transgender people.
Our transgender brothers and sisters are far more likely to lack proper medical care, to be unemployed, to live in extreme poverty, and to be HIV-positive—and that’s when compared to their white transgender counterparts, not just the general population. The survey’s respondents were four times more likely than the general population to live in extreme poverty. One in five reported having been refused a home or apartment, another one in five report having been refused health care. More than one in five, 22 percent, reported having been harassed by law enforcement, and nearly half reported fear of seeking assistance from police. African American respondents reported all of this in even higher numbers.

If you haven’t already, I recommend taking a look at that report. The race statistics are sobering, and too important to ignore.

If you ever doubted that racial issues are trans issues, here’s proof. If this isn’t enough, nothing ever will be.

Ok i wanna use this chance to talk about somethign really important when it comes to the depiction of light, color and shadows in a visual work. I hope this can help all the people (both artists and people who enjoy art) who are unsure how to go about this. First, some basics about light and color.
Color, unlike most people would think is not an inherent characteristic within objects, unlike concept like form or texture it depends completely on the reflection of light that hit objects around us and wich bouncing rays arrive to our eyes, and then the sensory stimuli is interpreted by the brain. . The inner workings of the eye can be summed by these stages
1. Trichromatic image capture: colour information is recorded by the responses of the L,M and S cone cells in the retina.
2. Opponent processing: responses from the L,M and S cones are converted into three signals, for brightness, yellowness vs blueness, and redness vs. greenness respectively, the latter two providing our perception of hue and saturation.
3. Processing for colour constancy: information on hue, brightness and saturation from throughout the visual field is analysed and resolved into an interpretation of the hue, brightness and saturation of the illumination, and the hue, value and chroma of the visible surfaces.
Basically our eyes only have the types of cells that can recognize only certain types of wavelenghts in a ray of light, those being Red, green and blue , the union of all of them creating white light. Of course even then, that doesnt mean that theyre inherently blue or red or green, or any color we can percieve, its just our ol silly brain adapting to interpret the stimuli of light in an easy intuitive way. Anyway.
This type of colored light mixing is called additive, because it works by adding light.
Light rays, ill keep it short for the sake of simplicity, are made of different kind of wavelenghts as ive said, and the objects act as some sort of lets say, filters, absorbing certain wavelenghts and bouncing other ones!
Heres a silly chart
Mixin paints by this principle is mixing “filters”, this system is called substractive color mixing because it takes away light.
Now taking this into account we can guess rather faithfully how light would bounce with other objects.
For example, a red little rubber ball!
With this principle we can gather that red filter (red filter being an object that absorbs green and blue color and bounces red) plus red light = a really saturated reflected light, almost as strong as the source light.
But the opposite also applies: A red filter + (green light)= almost no light boumced, the object will look desaturated and dark because of it. Because pure green light has no red in it, so the vast majority gets absorbed, the little that bounces, giving it a dark greenish gray look.
But as any filter ! an object can get clogged of light! In that case, their absorbing properties doesnt apply anymore and light just bounces off making the object look “light” or with a color near in hue and lightness to the source light. Depending on the kind of object’s reflective surface, this can be achieved with less or more brightness of the source of light.
For example, try seeing people as they are under the light sun, their hair will turn really light and yellowlike because of the high reflective qualities of it, as we said thats because theres so much light and its so bright that it “clogs” the filters and the light just bounces pure. The same can happen with skin with the right quantity of light and the right hue, thats why in cloudy days all seems washed out and desaturated, and in sunny days everythign just JUMPS with color!.
To finish this, ill just put a real life example.
No, no friends, dont be scared, my cheek is not turning white! Its just the magic of color happening!
The light source is a yellow light, and with my brown redish skin as weve said, should make it look orange and saturated and for some parts of my face IT DOES! but look at the part directly facing the light, takign the brow of it! it looks almost white!. At this distance and with this much light, my skin is reflecting much more rays from the source, making my skin look clear, almost white/yellow.
Heres some other examples!
Here my hair is taking the brow of light, and therefore reflects most of the light shot at it, giving it a yellow almost white look, similar to the source. My face, takin the yellow light that bounces from the table im on upwards to my face takes an orange look because my skin doesnt oversaturates on light.
So basically, you have to take matters when depciting a scene
1.- What kind of light source im going for, is it a stron like or a dim one, what color is it and where is it placed?
2.-.The object who id under this light what kind of light it reflects? would it be accentuated by the light or not? What kind of surface it has? is it rugged? shiny? slick?
3.- Learn where to place your highlights, highlights are always the color of the source light! and only appear under certain conditions, itheyre the spice of the picture and if you go overboard or too subtle on them can make the piece lose a lot of strenght.
Anyway, i hope this has been of help to people still trying to figure out how color works, if you think this is too shallow, yo ucan always look at this!

It gives am uch more in dept explanation about the nuances of light, shadow and color than i could ever give.
You know, I get what you’re saying here, and you have obviously have a firm grasp on lighting and such. So I was a little confused about a few things lacking in your commentary, and then to go to your blog and read your comments, that you’re saying this illustration has realistic lighting and you’re in disagreement with damnlayoffthebleach.
What you’re saying about lighting is partially true yes, but a few REALLY important factors are missing here.
The first one being that’s an image from a camera you’re using to illustrate your point.
I don’t know if you have ever taken a photo of something brightly lit and compared it to a real life scenario, but cameras often BLOW OUT an image very much. ESPECIALLY with something THAT BRIGHT RIGHT next to your face. Now I am sitting here holding my hand up to a bright light, and I am white, but honestly, my skin tone is still apparent. It does NOT blow out bleach white, color is still there. I know, as I have taken photos right beside this light, that if I took a photo of this, the lighted portion of my hand would be completely blown out. Now I realize some artists use photos as reference, I have before myself and still do sometimes, but the truth of the matter is there is a reason artists are encouraged often to work from life. Because cameras can change a lot of things, distort visuals, change color based on settings, and as seen in your photos, change lighting. The best way to create an image is to work with your mind free of ‘filters’ so you can apply only your own. Cameras just provide another filter for that image to go through before you create your own. Some artists use photos with the purpose in mind to expose that camera filter or whatnot, but that’s where the second point that’s missing comes into play.
In your theory about lighting, you seem to be ignoring the shading part here, and more importantly the midtones. Your face does not appear WHITE, despite the WHITE light on the side, but I don’t see an explanation as to why. So why then is that so? Because of the midtones and shadows.
Midtones give us the indicator for the general color of something, and shadows tend to gives us the volume of something. I mean your red ball indicates this perfectly, with yellow or white light, voila the midtones still tell us the ball is red!
EVEN with a specific lighting palette, our eyes are able to translate what those midtones are. As you showed, highlights should be used sparingly, images can be overlighted, because otherwise you’re blowing them out. Yes, in this illustration the lighting likely would be blown out, but fact of the matter is, she IS being whitewashed, because the midtones are exceedingly pale. Those highlights can stay where they are surely, but the midtones, if they are to be represented realistically, should be much darker. The highlights are entirely beside the point here.
To test this I found an image on google, and opened it up in photoshop:

Now I think we can all agree this woman is black. But you know, the funny thing is, IT’S NOT BECAUSE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS ON HER FACE.

As you can see, by this theory, that lighting and specifically HIGHLIGHTS can whitewash someone, she should look BLUE to us. But she doesn’t. BECAUSE OF THE MIDTONES.

Funny how that works isn’t it? I’m sure we can all agree, it definitely looks like that is the color of her skin.
The funny thing is I can do it easily with your images as well, anyone could. I cannot pick out a midtone there that does not appear to be your skintone, blow it out all you want. It doesn’t matter how blown out the lighting is, there are still midtones that indicate the general tonal quality of the skin.
I mean it was pretty awesome of you to write up such a long explanatory post, but we have a responsibility as artists. The nature of some of our depictions becomes a part of the media, and that media is exceedingly okay with whitewashing.
But it’s not okay, and honestly, damnlayoffthebleach has every right to be pissed off. The message in that mass media whitewashing is that paler is prettier, because in the end that is the drive of the color harmonies in an image, visual pleasure. How many POC characters are really out there right now? And even more than that how many WOC characters? Korra is a WOC, an independant, leading WOC, and that is a rare thing to see in mainstream media. To have artists running around erasing that, and claiming it’s because of lighting and that people who argue that it’s not don’t seem to understand it, is wrong. People are going to make mistakes, but if you’re doing something inherently wrong, the person angry at you is not to blame. Yes, it’s lovely when someone takes the time to provide sound advice with lots of information, but this is not just a normal critique of an image. The wrong here is not just a problem with the image itself, it is a problem with society that is bleeding into the image, people of color have every right to take that personally.
Damnlayoffthebleach has talked about this point SO MANY TIMES, and people still come back with the same, WRONG argument. Swallow your pride and take responsibility of what you’re doing wrong, then fix it, instead of blaming the person who is angry at you.
Entropy: WIP
Eventually I’ll get this colored, for now I’m presently having one of the usual ‘ugh art what am I doing’ bouts that seems to hit me once a month. This started as a really random… I don’t even know what, in my sketchbook a few months ago. I have no idea where it’s going yet.
On the plus side however, this is the first of the new side of my comic Paint by Number I’ll have posted. I won’t say much about it yet, because things are still settling, but I will say one thing; this story has taken an interesting turn down the fantasy/sci-fi road. It’s actually something I’ve been attempting to get to work since the start, now it’s starting to. I guess we’ll see where it goes from here!
